We were reading Plato’s Phaedrus in my Rhetoric Class…and the Definition of Love became prominent…I thought it was an interesting perspective on Love…since everyone thinks about wat Love really is...right??…..let me know who all understand….

According to Socrates…God gave us a punishment for being arrogant and alter ego. The punishment was giving us only half of ourselves, and making us search relentlessly for completion by another. Love is a remedy for that punishment to complete ourselves in this materialistic life….but we don’t yearn for the completion usless it is the possession of the good in others….meaning it is not only just completion but good completion…

The greatest love for Plato would show the secret beauty in everything, the hidden harmony that directs all humans toward the best of all possible ends. His ideal lover leaves emotionality behind, his love being not an attempt to express or purify sensuous feelings but rather to suppress them by sheer rationality. (I thought this was awesome!) Even when true love is described as a divine madness, emotions merely attend the condition, bespeaking the eagerness of the soul to enter into relationship with absolute beauty. The relationship itself is intellectual, the attainment of wisdom, of knowledge about the highest Form. Plato’s theory of love seems, therefore, successful in creating a very special synthesis of rationality and emotion. (Lydia)
